The province of Ontario has one of the most aggressive conservation targets in North America reducing peak demand by 6,300 megawatts by 2025 or earlier. For Ontario, this target is the equivalent of removing one in five electricity users from the grid.
Conservation and energy efficiency underpin the province's future electricity system planning because they are the quickest, least expensive and most environmentally friendly solutions to the increasing electricity needs. Simply put, the cheapest megawatt of electricity is the one we don't use in the first place.
The Green Energy Act that was passed into law in May 2009, calls for a growth in Ontario's culture of conservation. Developing this culture of conservation is a long-term commitment. We are striving to become a province where energy efficiency is increasingly valued and the benefits of saving energy are well known and integrated into our everyday behaviour.
The Power Pledge campaign makes it easy for Ontarians to commit to taking simple, meaningful actions that will conserve electricity and positively impacting the environment.
